Tombstone

Donna briefs Jason and Grant about a new case in Tombstone, Ariz. The site is the Birdcage Theater, which used to be a drinking and burlesque hall and is the only original building remaining in Tombstone. People who visit and work there say they have heard sounds and voices. In Tombstone, Paula Jean Reed, the curator of the Birdcage Theater, and Leroy Colomy, its manager, show the team around the building. Leroy takes them to the main floor, where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday came to see performances. Rachel Howard, an employee, says that she has seen the shadow of a stagehand walk from stage right to stage left. Leroy claims that after he felt a cold spot near the crafts table, something tapped him three times on the shoulder — but nothing was there. Leroy takes the team backstage, where Vikki Bryant, another employee, claims to have heard someone playing the piano even though she was alone. The team sees "Black Mariah," a hearse that was used to take bodies to the Blue Hill Cemetery. Leroy says that photographs of the hearse sometimes reveal a figure behind it. Near the High Roller room, people have seen shadows walk down the stairs; in the Bordello room (where Wyatt Earp had an affair), photographs have been developed showing faces looking back from a mirror. While exploring backstage, Jason and Grant hear cards being shuffled and a hard rubber ball being bounced. They hear an iron gate open in another room; when they go to investigate, Grant sees a shadow but isn't sure what it is. When they check out a noise backstage they both see a shadow pass in front of a window and hear shuffling sounds again. In the auditorium, Brian and Steve hear one of their own heavy electrical cords fall from a bell. Brian insists that he wrapped the cord around twice and that it was secure. Unable to debunk the event, they conclude that something interfered with the cord. Lisa sees a black shadow move across a backstage wall while she is working with Dave and Donna. Later, when Dave and Brian are backstage, Brian smells perfume; Dave doesn't notice it. After Brian sees a shadow they detect a high EMF reading in an area where they both hear something being dropped. Jason and Grant see something as they climb the stairs to the stage. They compare notes with Brian and Steve; both duos describe sighting a woman in a white dress wearing a bonnet. Brian, Steve and Dave analyze the footage, which shows the cord moving on its own. They also discern audio of calliope music that they didn't hear during the investigation. Jason and Grant meet with Paula and Leroy and tell them about their experiences. They play the audio of the calliope music and show them the footage of the cord moving. Jason and Grant tell them that the building seems to be haunted and Leroy agrees: "The building has made a believer out of me."

Copper Queen Hotel The team heads to Bisbee, Ariz., to investigate the Copper Queen Hotel. The former mining town was a violent place where people died in mining accidents and bar brawls. Hotel employee Candace Stewane takes them to the room of Julia Lowell, a prostitute who committed suicide after falling for a married man. Allegedly, if a man sleeps alone in the room Julia will whisper in his ears and uncover and tickle his feet. In a fourth-floor room, Candace says, the ghost of Billy (who drowned in the San Pedro River) messes with the TV if children are in the room and folds people's clothes differently. Candace warns the team to mind where they put their "bling" because Billy will move it. Steve and Brian attribute high EMF readings on the fourth floor to old wiring and electrical boxes. In Billy's room, Jason and Grant notice a "headless" figure. Brian puts a camera in Julia's room, where Grant is sleeping, to record any activity there during the night. Brian, Steve and Dave Tango analyze the image that Jason and Grant recorded and conclude that it's Grant's reflection from the armoire. Footage from Grant's room shows the covers being pulled off him while he was sleeping. Jason and Grant show Candace the footage of a blanket being pulled off of Grant, but they can't say that it's paranormal activity. Jason admits there's not enough evidence to say the building is haunted. Candace agrees, though she believes that Julia pulled back Grant's blanket. The team visits the OK Corral, the site of a famous gunfight between cattle-rustlers and the Earps in which three men died. Josh Hawley, an OK Corral employee, takes Jason, Grant and Steve to the gunfight site. Josh says that people outside the compound say they see bright lights and hear voices from there. He shows them the building (now the OK Corral office) where Justice Jim Barnett was killed. Manager Douglas Clay says he saw the ghost of a tall, thin man in a flat-brimmed hat enter the building, but when he went in, it was empty. Josh alleges a man with a beard looked through the window then closed it quickly. Jason gives everyone cowboy hats. Steve expresses concern that dust and wind might impair the investigation. In the office, Jason sees something odd on the thermal imaging camera. Grant reviews the footage but can't tell what it shows. Brian and Steve find cold spots with the digital thermometer at the shootout area, but they suspect the wind is affecting their readings. Jason and Grant decide to stop early because the weather might impede the gathering of audio-visual evidence. Brian, Steve and Dave analyze the evidence, which Steve admits is insubstantial. Steve tells Jason and Grant there was no sign of an apparition. Jason and Grant inform Josh that the data doesn't suggest that the building is haunted, but they ask Josh if they can come back when it's not "monsoon season."

Johnson House A case in Vermont features reports ranging from bangings and knockings to a 5-year-old girl alleging that she saw a ghostly figure at the foot of her bed. Jason, Grant and Steve meet Libby Johnson. She shows them her daughters' bedroom, where her husband heard "voices" and was physically touched an unseen entity. When he asked it to stop, it laughed, then complied. Libby says that her daughter sees "fairies" who wake her up in the middle of the night to play. She takes the investigators to the master bedroom, where she saw the apparition of a woman and a black figure that Grant thinks might be a "shadow person." During the investigation, Jason and Grant go to the girls' bedroom. Jason thinks he hears a laugh and feels the bed shake. Reviewing footage, Mike Dionne catches what sounds like a little girl's voice when Steve is talking. Steve meets with Jason and Grant and plays two audio clips, including the one Mike found (which sounds like, "Who's Jason?") and the other, which sounds like humming, when Dave asks, "What's your name?" Jason and Grant tell the Johnsons about Jason's experience with the bed but can't draw any conclusions from it. Jason tells them that they've learned a 6-year-old boy died in the house, then he plays the audio clips. Jason and Grant say they don't think the spirit is a threat to the family, but there might be a burst of paranormal activity before their daughter loses interest in it altogether. Libby admits that the EVP was unsettling but not scary, and her husband thinks it "adds character" to the house. West Virginia Penitentiary From the former West Virginia Penitentiary comes a picture of a "shadow man" who darts in and out of the halls there. Jason and Grant meet Mike Parnicza, an employee, who shows them the cafeteria where a witness says she photographed the "shadow man." They visit the largest main line cell block in the prison; correctional trainer Maggie Gray and her husband saw a dark figure and heard a door close there even though they were alone. Next they go to "the Hole," where Allen Brindza filmed what he thinks was an apparition. During the investigation, Brian and Dustin hear a whisper and scuffling coming from Cell 13. Jason and Grant get a high EMF reading in the maximum-security area; they also hear footsteps and banging but are unable to track the source of the sounds because of padlocked gates. In the prisoners' recreation area, Dustin sees a weird-shaped misty vapor move across the wall. Down in "the Hole," Jason and Grant feel pressure on the sides of their heads and hear noises from above. Brian and Steve detect large EMF spikes, which they conclude are coming from the pipes. In the cafeteria Jason and Grant debunk the photo of the "shadow man" by demonstrating that people can easily capture their own image on-camera there and not realize it. Steve, Brian and Dave Tango analyze the footage without finding any solid evidence of paranormal activity. Jason and Grant tell Mike about the their findings and show him how the "shadow man" could be recreated. Mike is glad that they came and explained things to him, but he still thinks the building is haunted.

Veau Residence The Veau family has sighted apparitions and heard noises, including loud rappings and bangings, inside their house. Heavy wood doors have opened and closed on their own. The children have reported feeling drunk and dizzy and having upset stomachs. Jason, Grant and Steve meet with Mark Veau, the homeowner, who shows them the stairway post where an apparition of a little boy was seen. In the formal dining room and in the basement a man's voice has been heard calling women's names, including "Ginger" (perhaps a reference to the house's history as a brothel). His daughter saw the outline of a man in her bedroom. In the master bedroom, a man burned to death in his bed, but there was no evidence of a fire and the door opened by itself when Mark's wife had her hands full. In the tower, a friend heard a clunking noise and found the medal that was around his neck bent and on the floor. During the investigation Dave Tango and Steve hear something being knocked over in the tower but can't find anything there. In the master bedroom Donna gets a high EMF reading and Dave's camera battery drains when Donna asks for a sign of a presence. Steve plays two audio recordings for Jason and Grant. One sounds like someone saying, "Hey," or "Come here." The other sounds like a creepy laugh. He also plays video footage that shows the camera which was placed in the tower being moved. Jason and Grant show Mark the tower footage and play the audio clips. All agree there's not enough evidence to call the house haunted. Mark says he got a creepy feeling when he heard the EVP and thinks the "mystery will continue." Bucksteep Manor Jason, Grant and Steve meet with Heather, a chef at Bucksteep Manor, a bed and breakfast built in 1897. In the kitchen she has seen someone who looks like a monk peer through the door. In the basement, girls have had their hair pulled and a knife was thrown into a hole but wasn't heard striking the floor. In the common area, employee Cora Mitchell saw the apparition of a man lying on the couch after all the guests had gone for the day. A former manager saw the figure of a monk go into Room 5, and the daughter of an employee saw a monk in robes near the chapel. As Jason and Grant drive around in a golf cart hoping for a sign of the monk, they catch signs of movement on the thermal camera but aren't sure what it is. Brian and Steve go into the chapel. Steve feels one of the pews shaking. Jason and Grant crawl into the hole in the basement and find insulation that would prevent the knife from making noise when it was thrown there. Grant feels some tugging from cobwebs there that might explain the reports of hair being pulled. After analyzing the footage Steve shows Jason and Grant two thermal images. One is a hot spot that they decide is probably an animal; the other is footage from the golf cart, which is similar to a finger crossing through the camera's view. Steve also tells them of his experience with the pew. Jason and Grant inform Heather that the chapel was built as a tribute to an Episcopal priest; it's possible that people have confused priests' robes with monks' robes. They tell her about Steve's experience and explain about the insulation and the cobwebs. Jason and Grant agree that the building has an interesting history but can't say whether it's haunted. Regardless, Heather thinks there's a presence there.

During TAPS's previous visit to the Stanley Hotel they went on a tour with Billy Ward, the concierge. He took them to Room 217, where Stephen King and his wife found their clothes and suitcases put away after leaving the room. Billy tells them that the spirits of a maid's children have been heard playing in the hall on the fourth floor. In Room 401 a man saw someone take his wedding ring and walk into the closet but when he looked inside there was no one there. In the Manor House, a duplicate of the larger building, Billy took them to Room 1302, where a housekeeper finished cleaning and returned to find lamps and pictures on the floor. He says that the windows on this floor go up and down by themselves. In the concert hall, a homeless woman froze to death and was heard screaming when he told a ghost story to a group of teenage girls. In highlights from the live investigation, Jason, Grant and CM Punk of ECW start in Room 217 (where Stephen King stayed). CM Punk says that earlier he heard kids playing nearby, but the manager said there were no kids checked in. Brian and Steve investigate the room. They detect high EMF readings but can't trace them to an electrical source, and they find a cold spot. In the ballroom Dustin sees a shadow, and the room gets cold even though no windows were open. … As Brian and Steve investigate the music room (which wasn't open during the first investigation) they think they hear music around the piano. … Jason and Grant check out Room 401 (where Jason slept before) and hear music that seems to emanate from the bathroom. There is an employee passageway built into the side of the mountain. When Jason and Grant investigate, they hear a piano playing and a voice laughing and saying "Hello." They get a text message from a viewer suggesting that they call for Katie, who died there when she was 12. Dave Tango, Steve and CM Punk go to the billiard room, where they hear noises that sound like people talking. They feel the temperature drop when they ask for the sign of a presence. … In Room 412, where a woman became possessed a year ago, Dustin and Donna get high EMF readings. … While Dave Tango and Steve are in the Manor House they hear creaking and footsteps and feel cold zones. Dave Tango, Brian and Steve analyze the footage. They listen to an EVP from the tunnel. Steve catches footage of a camera falling on the bed in Room 401 and notices a face there. When they play the camera footage for Jason and Grant, they realize that the face is not a paranormal spirit. The team talks about their personal experiences and conclude that the hotel is haunted. Grant says it earned a "place in their hearts," and Jason says they'll come back and investigate anytime.
